Product description
A NEW CHAPTER IN SILVER IS WRITTEN
The internationally acclaimed Krugerrand is the most widely held and actively traded bullion coin in the world, with over 60 million sold. It
is the easiest way for investors to own and trade gold. First minted in 1967, the Gold Krugerrand coin remains one of the highest selling gold
coins today. Its a symbol of of wealth and prestige.
Issued only in South Africa, the Krugerrand was the first gold coin in the world to be denominated in ounces of pure gold. Launched in 1970, it was
first only produced as a 1oz gold bullion coin. Then, recognising an opportunity in the market, fractionals of a ½oz, ¼oz and 1/10oz were
introduced in 1980.
Krugerrands have always been legal tender coins under South African legislation but without a face value. This was done to emphasise that the value
of each coin is directly related to the prevailing value of their fine gold content. They were mass produced to enable the "man in the street" to purchase gold easily and with confidence.
Front (Motif- or Mainside, Obverse (numismatics))
The portrait on the obverse of the coin is a picture of Paul Kruger. The name Kruger is originating from the 19th century boerpresident Paul Kruger which has also given name to the famous Kruger park. The rand, which is also the name of South Africas currency, is originating from the geographical name Witwatersrand in the Gauteng province where large amounts of gold was found during the end of the 19th century.
Back (Valueside, Reverse (numismatics))
The common reverse on the 2017-dated Krugerrands features South Africa’s national animal, the springbok, as designed and engraved by sculptor
Coert Steynberg and first used on the 1947 5-shilling coin. They also all bear a ‘50th anniversary’ privy mark to commemorate the enduring
value of this internationally recognised brand.
