In 1997, the British Royal Mint started issuing the Britannia silver coin. The occasion was the 10th anniversary of the Britannia coin in gold. At that time it was the first bullion coin from Europe. The original fineness of 958/1000 was increased to 999/1000 in 2013.
Front
The motif has changed every two years since 2001. Since 2012, the Britannia appears essentially with shield, helmet and trident. The lettering on the edge of the 1 ounce Britannia silver coin reads one ounce fine silver, Britannia and the year of issue. The inside of the edge is jagged.
