In 1997, the British Royal Mint started with the release of the silver coin Britannia. The occasion was the 10th anniversary of the gold Britannia coin. At that time it was the first bullion coin from Europe. The original fineness of 958/1000 was increased to 999/1000 from 2013.

In the odd years, the motif changes since 2001. The even years were adorned with a Britannia with shield, since 2008 the representation changed irregularly. From 2012, the Britannia shows itself essentially with shield, helmet and trident. In the lettering on the edge of the 1 ounce Britannia silver coins is one ounce fine silver, Britannia and the year of minting. The inside of the edge is serrated.
