The Chile Peso gold coins were issued in the 20th century by the Banca Central de Chile and minted by the Santiago de Chile Mint (= mintmark "S"). Chile is located in southwest South America.
Gold pesos were common circulation coins and were formerly minted in large numbers for everyday payment transactions, which is why most coins are in a rather poor state of preservation. Today they are traded worldwide as gold bullion coins. Gold pesos that can no longer be bought are melted down and the fine gold obtained is used again for the production of gold bars, gold plates or gold granules for industry.
The fine gold content is 900/1000 (= 90% gold).
A female bust, the so-called Liberty, is shown on the motif side. As the goddess of freedom, she symbolizes independence from Spain, which the Republic of Chile gained in 1818. Above is REPUBLICA DE CHILE, below is the respective year of issue.
The coat of arms of the Republic of Chile is depicted on the value side. The coat of arms shows a shield with the five-pointed star from the national banner of Chile, held on the left by a southern Andean deer and on the right by an Andean condor, both wearing a crown.
Above is the nominal value in capital letters, which is also numbered on the left and below the coat of arms in the unit Condor (1 Condor = 10 pesos).
