In 1865 Italy joined the Latin Monetary Union. Member states were Belgium, Switzerland and France. The LMU wanted a single currency with the same standards between member states. The denominations and fineness of each coin was uniform. However, the names of the currencies were still different. This simplified trading between countries and encouraged economic growth.
The 20 lire gold coin was produced in different mints in Italy. Depending on the mint, the motif side differed. The fineness of the gold coin is 900/1000 us it has a gross weight of 6.45 g. The fine weight is 5.81 g and the diameter is approximately 21.2 mm. The actual value of the gold coin is higher than the face value.
On the motif side of the 20 Lire Italy gold coin, different portraits are depicted depending on the mint. For example, of the important Italian personalities, such as Victor Emmanuel II or Umberto I.
In the gold coin exemplarily considered here the portrait of the Italian king Umberto I. is illustrated. The circulating inscription shows the name "UMBERTO I", a saying "RE T'ITALIA" and and year of mintage "1882".
The value side is centered on the coat of arms and crown of the Italian Royal House of Savoy. King Umberto I, who is depicted on the design side, also belongs to this royal house. The coat of arms consists of a shield with a cross on it. The coat of arms is framed with an olive and oak branch. These are symbolic of strength and peace. To the left of the coat of arms is the letter "L". This stands for "Lire". To the right of the coat of arms is the number "20". Together, the letter and the number stand for the face value of the coin "20 Lire". Below the coat of arms and the branches, the letter "R" can be seen. This stands for the place of minting "Rome".
