The American Gold Eagle is a U.S. gold coin in the currency U.S. dollar. The coin is a bullion coin and was first issued by the U.S. Mint in 1986. The Gold Eagle is issued with a fineness of 9167 fine gold 22 carats (balance: 5.33% Cu and 3% Ag) with the U.S. Mint vouching for gold content and mass.
The market value of Gold Eagles generally approximates the price of gold, as is common with bullion coins. For coin collectors, the Gold Eagle is produced specifically in the Polished Plate quality. These coins are primarily produced at the West Point Mint in West Point, New York and can be identified by the mint mark "W" under the year.
Except for the stated denominations and finenesses, the design of the different Gold Eagles is identical. As with all bullion coins, the face value is more symbolic, and the actual value is far higher than the stated value. Nevertheless, the Gold Eagles are an official means of payment.

Front

The obverse, designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, shows Lady Liberty holding a torch in her right hand. The year numbers of the Gold Eagles of the minting years until 1991 are indicated with Roman numerals. From 1992 onwards, the year was struck in Arabic numerals. Above the motif is LIBERTY and around the coin along the edge are small stars.

The reverse, designed by Miley Busiek, features a male bald eagle, the heraldic bird of the United States,eagle, also carrying an olive branch as a symbol of freedom. He flies over an eyrie containing the female eagle with chicks. To the right of the motif is the inscription IN GOD WE TRUST, to the left of which is E PLURIBUS UNUM. Above the motif is stamped along the rim UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, below the motif 1 OZ. FINE GOLD - 50 DOLLARS.
