To commemorate the 50th anniversary, an anniversary issue will be issued in 2017 by Rand Refinery in a strictly limited mintage of 100,000 pieces.
The 1 Ounce Gold Krugerrand - TC Tribute Coin has an additional mintmark "50 Year Anniversary 1967 - 2017" on the obverse in addition to the familiar springbok.
The "Krugerrand" (in German Krugerrand) is an internationally recognized bullion coin and the most widely held and actively traded coin in the world with over 60 million sold. First minted in 1967, it is still one of the best-selling gold coins today. It is a symbol of wealth and prestige.
Started with a mintage of 40,000 in 1967, production peaked in the years 1974 to 1984 with up to 6 million pieces. With the ban on imports into the EU and USA, the circulation dropped sharply and reached its lowest point in 1995 with 8285 pieces. Currently, the production is again over 1 million pieces.
The Krugerrand was and is a legal tender without nominal value with a gold fineness of 91.6%. The higher rough weight results from the copper alloying to increase the scratch resistance. The copper content also gives the coin its typical reddish-gold hue.

The portrait on the obverse shows a picture of Paul Kruger. The name Kruger comes from the 19th century, President Paul Kruger, who also named the famous Kruger Park. The Rand, which is also South Africa's currency, comes from the geographical name Witwatersrand in Gauteng Province, where large quantities of gold were found in the late 19th century.

The reverse of the Gold Krugerrand features the national animal of South Africa, a springbok antelope. The 1947 springbok motif was created by Coert Steynberg, a famous South African sculptor who lived from 1905 to 1982.
