The Sovereign was first minted in 1816 under Queen Victoria in London. Since then, it has remained essentially unchanged. The coin is made of 22 carat gold and is also known as Crown Standard in the UK.
The most commonly used motif is Saint George on horseback in the fight against the dragon. At times only the royal coat of arms was used. On the other side is always the portrait of the respective owner of the throne. The portrait is adapted to the original every few years.
The back side of the Sovereign shows Queen Elisabeth ll.
Due to the numerous colonies of England, the sovereign spread worldwide and was long considered the money and investment coin par excellence. A few years later, the Sovereign was minted beside London, also in Bombay (I), Ottawa (C), Melbourne (M), Perth (P), Pretoria (SA) and Sydney (S).
To recognize, also very badly, this is on the respective letter, which is imprinted under the hind legs of the horse of the holy George. The historical Sovereign existed only in two sizes and dimensions.
The circulation was in the millions during the time of the gold standard, after which it tended to decline. Sovereigns were not minted every year, sometimes there were dropouts of 10 and more years. Even today, sovereigns are dominated, but the number of copies is in the 4- or lower 5-digit range.
