First released in 1986, the American Eagle gold coin was redesigned in 2021 to commemorate the 35th Anniversary of the American Eagle Coin Program. Coin security has been improved with the design change. This also includes a modified corrugation of the edge of the coin. Since then, the appearance of the coin has not changed, apart from the year of issue.
The manufacturer United States Mint produces the coin from 22k gold and small amounts of alloy. This consists of gold with a fineness of 916.7/1,000. It is composed of 91.67% gold, 3% silver and the rest copper.
The American Eagle gold coin has a face value of US$50 per ounce. As with all bullion coins, the face value is more of a symbolic character, as the actual value is far higher than the face value stated.
The obverse of the 2023 American Eagle gold coin features the figure of liberty with long, wavy hair designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. 50 stars circle around the 1 ounce coin, symbolizing the 50 states in America. In her left hand she holds an olive branch and in her right hand she carries a torch. The word "LIBERTY" is embossed above her. The year of issue 2023 is in the lower third.
The bald eagle, the heraldic animal of the USA, is depicted on the reverse. The coin comes with the country of origin “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, the face value “50 DOLLARS” and “1 OZ. FINE GOLD” circled. Above the eagle is the Latin saying "E PLURIBUS UNUM", which means something like "one out of many". The lettering "IN GOD WE TRUST" is shown below the Latin saying.
